Second-Wettest Summer in History Doesn’t Dampen Unprecedented Support for the Team
Sept. 5, 2015 – Highlighting a sixth consecutive season with increased attendance, the Indianapolis Indians concluded the home portion of the 2015 regular season tonight with a new Victory Field attendance record of 662,536.
On the field the Tribe (82-60) defeated the Toledo Mud Hens (60-82) 9-2.
Saturday’s sellout of 14,828 pushed the record-setting mark 2,247 higher than the previous record of 660,289 set last season. Prior to last season the single-season record was set in 1998 (659,237).
New franchise highs were set in 2015 for tickets sold through the team’s website IndyIndians.com, group tickets (25+), and use of the ballpark’s picnic areas. The Indians also posted a record number of sellouts (nine) and 28 crowds of at least 10,000 in the 14,200-seat ballpark.
“With 2015 on record as the second-wettest summer in the history of the city, we are especially grateful to our fans who supported us,” said General Manager Randy Lewandowski. “Indians fans took their enthusiasm and support of our mission to provide affordable and memorable family fun to new heights and we hope Central Indiana will support us a little bit longer as we prepare for the postseason.”
With its playoff placement still undecided, Indianapolis will end the season as either the International League West Division Champion or as the league’s Wild Card. Entering play tonight the team is tied for first place with the Columbus Clippers. The regular season ends on Labor Day, Sept. 7. Complete playoff information is available on IndyIndians.com.
The Tribe has welcomed more than 2.5 million fans to Victory Field over the last four seasons, the most of any U.S.-based Minor League Baseball team (2,555,447).
Earlier this year Baseball America ranked Victory Field sixth on its list of Top 25 Minor League Baseball ballparks. Of the five ballparks ranked ahead of Victory Field, they average 14 years younger at an average cost to build of $60.3 million. Victory Field will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2016. It opened in July of 1996 at a cost of $18 million.
