Ranking within Pirates organization
MLB.com: No. 11
Baseball America: No. 6
ESPN.com: No. 7
Bradenton (Hi-A): 4-1, 2.89 ERA, 12 G, 1 CG, 71.2 IP, 6 BB, 60 K
Altoona (Double-A): 8-5, 3.02 ERA, 16 G, 89.1 IP, 21 BB, 82 K
Kyle McPherson profiles as a middle-of-the-rotation starter in the big leagues, but he could be the No. 1 or 2 guy in Indianapolis to start 2012 after going 12-6 last season while splitting time between Bradenton and Altoona.
Primarily an infielder in the University of Mobile’s NAIA program, McPherson has made great strides since going 1-7 with a 6.02 ERA for the Rams in 2007. He was named the 2011 Pirates Minor League Pitcher of the Year, after leading the organization in strikeouts (142) and ranking second in wins (12) and ERA (2.96). McPherson also showed great control, as only 27 of the 652 total batters he faced reached base via a walk.
Thanks to his ability to make an easy transition to Double-A in 2011, MLB.com projects McPherson could make his major league debut sometime in 2012, especially if Pittsburgh’s rotation struggles early in the season.
